The Hunter Valley is world-renowned for its rolling vineyards and award-winning wineries—but beyond the cellar doors lies another kind of magic. From bushland escapes to breathtaking lookouts, the region is home to some truly incredible walking tracks. Whether you’re after a peaceful stroll under towering gums or a heart-pumping hike with big rewards, these walks let you soak up the Valley in the best way possible—on foot.

Broken Back Road Trail
If you’re ready for a challenge, the Broken Back Road Trail is the kind of hike that makes every step worth it. Stretching 23.2km through Pokolbin State Forest, this out-and-back trail takes you up to a trig tower with jaw-dropping panoramic views over the vineyards and hills.
Dry weather makes the track fairly easy, but after rain it’s a different story—muddy, slippery, and more demanding, so check conditions before you go. It’s a favourite with experienced hikers, campers, and mountain bikers. Free camping is permitted at the summit (though with no facilities, you’ll want to come prepared). With peaceful bush surrounds and epic lookout points, it’s one of the Valley’s ultimate walking adventures.

Starting at the Boarding House Dam picnic area, this easy 0.6km loop follows a meandering creek through lush native rainforest. Towering blue gums, grey myrtle, and turpentine trees create a shady canopy, making it an ideal walk even on warmer days.
Along the way, keep an eye out for lyrebirds darting through the undergrowth and listen for the laughter of kookaburras echoing through the trees. A stunning moss-covered rock wall offers a breathtaking photo opportunity, adding to the trail's natural beauty. If you're visiting in summer, bring your swimmers and cool off with a refreshing dip in the creek or dam before enjoying a relaxing picnic at the nearby barbecue area.

Bird enthusiasts will love spotting native species like speckled warblers, black-chinned honeyeaters, and grey-crowned babblers.
With fewer crowds, this track offers a peaceful retreat into nature, allowing you to immerse yourself in the sounds of cockatoos, magpies, and kookaburras.
