Looking for a refreshing nature escape during your Hunter Valley stay? Gloucester Falls in Barrington Tops National Park is one of the region’s most rewarding day trips, offering cool-climate rainforest walks, cascading waterfalls and invigorating mountain swimming holes.
Why Visit Gloucester Falls from the Hunter Valley
Staying with HolidayCo in the Hunter Valley places you within easy reach of Barrington Tops National Park — a UNESCO-listed wilderness area renowned for its ancient forests and alpine scenery. Gloucester Falls is a local favourite thanks to its short, scenic walk and natural swimming spots, making it ideal for couples, families and nature lovers alike.
Gloucester Falls Walking Track Overview
The Gloucester Falls walking track forms part of the famous Gloucester Tops Circuit, often regarded as one of the best walks in New South Wales. While the main track doesn’t directly showcase the falls, a short side path leads off the trail to the waterfalls and swimming pools.
Track details:
• Distance: 2km loop
• Elevation gain: approximately 80m
• Difficulty: Easy, with gentle inclines
• Walking time: 45–60 minutes, excluding swimming stops
The track is well maintained but includes natural features such as tree roots and rocky sections. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
What You’ll See on the Walk
Beginning at the Gloucester Falls Picnic Area, the trail starts as a wide gravel path before narrowing into shaded rainforest. Towering trees, lush ferns and moss-covered trunks create a cool, peaceful environment, with the sound of flowing creeks accompanying much of the walk. The higher elevation offers a noticeable temperature drop compared to the Hunter Valley, especially in summer.
Swimming at Gloucester Falls
A short, unmarked side track leads down to the falls and reveals several natural pools and cascades. These swimming spots are the true highlight of the walk.
- Upper cascades – shallow pools perfect for a quick dip
- Middle pool – slightly deeper and easy to access
- Main waterfall pool – the best swimming spot, deep enough for a proper swim.
Accessing the main pool involves carefully descending natural rock shelves. The rock surface is generally grippy when dry, but care should be taken at all times.
The water at Gloucester Falls is cold year-round due to the elevation, but on warm, sunny days it’s incredibly refreshing and energising. Swimming is not recommended after heavy rainfall, when water flow can be strong.
Lookouts and Optional Walks
After visiting the falls, the loop continues past the Gloucester Falls lookout before climbing gently to Andrew Laurie Lookout. On clear days, this lookout offers sweeping views across the Barrington Tops ranges.
If time permits, a detour to the nearby Antarctic Beech Forest is highly recommended. This rare forest of ancient beech trees is one of the most unique walking experiences in New South Wales.
Getting to Gloucester Falls
Parking is available at the Gloucester Falls Picnic Area, which includes picnic tables and a long-drop toilet. The final 29 kilometres of the drive is on an unsealed road with several creek crossings. In normal conditions, the road is suitable for standard vehicles.
Gloucester Falls is approximately a 1 hour and 20 minute drive from the town of Gloucester and makes an excellent day trip from the Hunter Valley.
Weather and What to Pack
Barrington Tops sits at a much higher elevation than the Hunter Valley, with temperatures often up to 10 degrees cooler. Weather can change quickly, so it’s best to pack warm layers year-round, even in summer.
Leave No Trace
Help protect this special environment by taking all rubbish with you and leaving Gloucester Falls exactly as you found it. Keeping the area pristine ensures future visitors can enjoy the same unspoilt experience.
